FireTV

Post by gatekeeper » Thu Apr 03, 2014 2:00 pm

I assume everyone's seen the announcements/specs of the new Amazon Fire TV?

I'm intrigued by this box. The hardware is pretty stout and the option game controller looks interesting enough.

Most of you know I've run a NAS/HTPC theater system for awhile now. I tried to experiment with different streaming boxes/pucks, without much success for local content. There's always been a catch somewhere. With Roku, it couldn't handle direct streaming - it had to pass through Plex Media Server (killing quality, usually), and Plex always gave me fits whenever I added new content to the library. I did the WDTV for awhile, but that doesn't have the "polish" of XBMC for local content.

I'm still waiting for word on whether FireTV will natively handle NAS content. I know the devs for XBMC were talking that since the OS is built on Android, porting might not be too much of an issue.

From the initial looks at XBMC on FireTV, looks like it's working with current builds. They need to address the hardware and stuff though, but if the thread is anything to go by (15 pages in the last week), it is working.

Since you and Dan have gone through and done an Android root, you should be comfortable with some of the extra setup necessary (ADB, for one)

Frankly, rooting my Android phones has never been a barrel of fun... but the end-result can be nice. Except when the Blue Tooth connection never worked in any of the builds.
